Installing a floating wall shelf with steel cable

Hanging or supporting a shelf with steel cable?

Read the tips and possibilities here.

Steel cable is a stylish and professional solution for reinforcing a shelf. This keeps valuable items or wide shelves with books neatly in place, while also giving them an industrial look. There are many floating suspension systems for shelves. We’ve listed a few options to inspire you.

Of course, you can choose simple white shelf brackets. But online there are many more attractive solutions available. For example, invisible shelf supports. These look great, especially in combination with the options below.

1. Diagonal shelf support

  • Drill a 12 mm hole at the bottom of the shelf
  • Place the fitting into the shelf (article MK018)
  • Drill 15 mm deep (tip: use a spade bit)
  • If needed, you can also recess the lower part into the hole
  • Attach the cable gripper invader with the 2 screw holes to the wall
  • Use a steel cable with end stop
  • Attach the end of the steel cable into the invader (article YY019)
  • At the back, tighten the cable until the shelf hangs at the desired height

This suspension system is also very suitable for dressers and fold-out or pull-out drawers.

Vertical steel cable mounting for stair treads and heavy shelves

Mounting a heavy shelf or stair tread

Extra heavy-duty mounting for shelves and stair treads.

  • First drill a hole for the plug you will use (M6 or M8)
  • Insert the plug and screw a hanger bolt into the ceiling
  • If it’s a wooden beam, no plug is needed
  • Screw a right-hand terminal onto it (article 716841009D), in this example 6 mm stainless steel
  • Optionally drill a hole with a spade bit so the cable stop (article 9034) disappears completely into the shelf
  • Attach the Allen fixing underneath the tread or shelf and tighten the Allen bolt firmly
  • Only use solid stainless steel cable (7x7); others have a fiber core and cannot be properly secured
  • Place the cable into the terminal and tighten the head firmly with two wrenches
  • Now tighten the entire assembly on the thread until the shelf hangs at the correct height

And more ideas:

Everyone knows the problem of having too little storage space at home. Because you lack enough shelves to neatly store your belongings—and probably have too many small decorative items—your room can quickly feel cluttered. Fortunately, there is a smart solution.

If you use corners that would otherwise go unused for installing shelves, you create more storage space and bring calm to your room. These shelves can be made of wood, metal, or chipboard—you can choose what best matches your interior style.

You can also choose the colors yourself, as long as you carefully consider the weight of the items you want to place on the shelves. Once you’ve decided where to install your shelves, it’s important to reinforce the shelf corner with steel cable—you don’t want everything to come off the wall over time.

Reinforcing your shelf corner with steel cable is easy if you have the right materials and tools. Adjustable shelves are often not very sturdy or stable. If you want to place more than just light items on them, you can create extra reinforcement using steel cable.

You can calculate the required cable thickness yourself or ask an expert for advice. The steel cable you can buy online for reinforcing your shelf corner is high quality and will not discolor or rust. Creating shelves in otherwise unused corners is a smart and cost-effective way to organize your belongings.

You can also create shelf corners in other rooms besides the living room. Think of the kitchen for storing small jars or cookbooks, the children’s room for a cozy corner with a nightlight or stuffed toy, or the bathroom for your care products. Wherever you plan to use a corner effectively, don’t forget to look online for inspiration on how to reinforce your shelf corner with steel cable!
