A pulley consists of a wheel with a groove around its circumference, in which the rope runs. The wheel rotates around an
axle. The wheel may be fitted with a
bearing to reduce friction with the axle. The ends of the axle are secured in the side plates. The side plates come together in a
hook or eye, which is attached to a fixed point or to the load being lifted. A pulley can contain several wheels, either mounted together on one axle or distributed across multiple axles. This is referred to as a pulley block or multi-sheave block.
