Pieter: I grew up in a hardware store. Trade always fascinated me, but I first worked in construction. After a few years I took the leap to start my own company — a wholesale business for DIY products, tape, rope, and tools. Once I had my driver’s license, I wanted to hit the road right away.

Annelies: I met Pieter while doing packing work for his wholesale business. What he called “organized chaos” looked like a mess to me. So I helped him tidy up the warehouse. We talked a lot and quickly clicked. After a few months we started dating — I was 14, he was 18. I also began handling some administration so he could focus more on sales.

Pieter: I gained experience in my father’s shop and from other shopkeepers, many over 60 years old. They taught me a lot about the products and gave valuable advice.

Annelies: I started working in a delicatessen — organizing tastings, remembering customers’ names, and making sure they left with a smile. From 2000 I joined the business full-time.

Pieter: Then the recession came. Many customers retired and few new shops opened. We looked for future opportunities, and I became interested in the still-young world of the internet. A friend built a website where shopkeepers could log in and place their orders.

Annelies: More and more companies joined, and even consumers made inquiries, often referred to local shops. But that process was cumbersome, so we looked for better solutions.

Pieter: We tested a consumer website. Competition was still limited, and improving online visibility became my hobby. I shared my enthusiasm with friends — some of whom now also run e-commerce businesses.

Annelies: The internet grew rapidly, so we needed extra staff.

Pieter: Every Wednesday morning we review improvement ideas from our team and customers.

Annelies: A good review score means a lot to us — it shows customer satisfaction. If something does go wrong, we call the customer and find the best solution together.

Pieter: We keep looking for better solutions. Many customers send us photos of their projects, which we use to inspire others. Every month we give away a power drill in our photo contest. See the latest winners here.
