A 4 mm stainless steel wire rope is generally suitable for hanging and tensioning small to medium-sized shade sails. Its suitability also depends on the size of the sail, the distance between the fixing points, the expected wind load and the strength of the posts or walls.
A 7×19 wire rope consists of seven strands containing nineteen wires each. This construction makes the cable relatively flexible and easy to handle. It can be guided through eyelets and thimbles and is suitable for installations that require cable loops.
A black wire rope is less noticeable when combined with dark shade sails, posts and façades. This creates a subtle, modern appearance. Depending on the type of coating, the black outer layer can also protect the wire rope against dirt and direct contact.
Yes, provided the wire rope and its fittings are intended for outdoor use. A4 or AISI 316 stainless steel is recommended because it offers better resistance to moisture, rain and salty air than A2 stainless steel. Regularly inspect the black coating for damage.
This varies between products. On a coated wire rope, 4 mm may refer to the total outside diameter, while the stainless steel core is thinner. Always check the product specifications before purchasing wire-rope clips, thimbles or other fittings.
Install a stainless steel turnbuckle or cable tensioner on at least one side. This allows you to tighten the wire rope gradually. Apply enough tension to reduce sagging and flapping, but avoid overloading the cable, shade sail or fixing points.

Yes. A strong stainless steel spring designed for shade sails can absorb some of the force caused by sudden wind gusts. However, it is not a substitute for strong posts, suitable wall anchors and correct installation. Remove the shade sail during storms or whenever recommended by its manufacturer.
Use a sharp wire-rope cutter suitable for stainless steel. Ordinary pliers can crush the cable and cause its individual wires to fray. Wrap tape around the cutting point before cutting and finish the end with a suitable termination.
Only use clips or ferrules designed for the actual cable diameter and stainless steel wire rope. With coated cable, consider both the outside diameter and the manufacturer’s instructions. Professionally swaged terminals are generally preferable for heavily loaded connections.
Measure the distance between each corner of the shade sail and its corresponding fixing point. Add enough length for loops, thimbles, turnbuckles and installation waste. Depending on the distances involved, a 50-metre reel can accommodate several fixing points or multiple shade sails.
Make sure the sail is tensioned firmly and evenly. Position the fixing points so that the sail has the specified shape and sufficient slope. Check the tension again after the first few days, as the fabric and connections may settle slightly.
Wire rope designed for outdoor use can generally remain outside all year. Inspect it regularly for damage, loose connections and wear to the coating. The shade sail itself may need to be removed during winter and in severe storms. Always follow the sail manufacturer’s instructions.
The maximum load depends on the stainless steel core, its 7×19 construction, the coating and the end fittings used. Never use the breaking load as the allowable working load: the safe working load is considerably lower. Check the product specifications and seek professional advice for large or permanently installed shade sails.
Yes. A strong wire rope is only effective when the posts, walls, eye plates and anchors can also withstand the wind load. Large shade sails can generate considerable pulling forces. Never attach a shade sail to drainpipes, lightweight fences or unsuitable masonry.
