Install wire rope clips in 6 steps

1. Choose the correct size. The clip must match the diameter and construction of the wire rope.
2. Form the loop. Use a suitable wire rope thimble where possible and leave enough tail length for all the required clips.
3. Fit the first clip. Position it approximately one saddle width (B) from the end of the dead-end tail.
4. Fit the second clip. Place it as close as possible to the thimble without damaging the outer wires.
5. Space the remaining clips. Where specified in the product instructions, keep a distance of 1.5 to 3 × B between the saddles.
6. Tighten evenly. Alternate between both nuts and use a torque wrench to reach the specified tightening torque.

How many wire rope clips do you need?

This depends on the rope diameter, clip type and application. Three clips are not automatically sufficient for every assembly. Follow the product table for:

• the minimum number of wire rope clips;
• the required dead-end tail length;
• the spacing between the clips;
• the correct tightening torque.

After installation

Apply the first load in a controlled manner. Check whether the rope has moved and retighten the nuts to the specified torque. Inspect the assembly regularly for loose nuts, corrosion, deformation and broken wires.

Common installation mistakes

• Placing the U-bolt on the live, load-bearing part.
• Using the wrong size or too few clips.
• Leaving too little rope beyond the last clip.
• Tightening the nuts by feel instead of using the specified torque.
• Failing to recheck the torque after the first load.
• Installing clips over a plastic coating without the manufacturer's approval.
