Most suspension systems consist of three main components: a ceiling or wall fixing, a wire rope and a cable gripper that secures the rope in position. A self-locking gripper allows the suspension length to be adjusted during installation without the need to create a fixed termination at the adjustment point. Depending on the design, the gripper can also be released to readjust the height after installation. This makes wire rope suspension systems suitable for a wide range of applications, from a single pendant light to a row of acoustic panels that need to hang at precisely the same height.
The correct choice depends on the weight and dimensions of the object, the number of suspension points required, the desired drop length and the construction of the ceiling or wall. For lighter objects, such as a single light fitting or picture, a simple suspension kit may be suitable, provided that its rated load and mounting requirements are met. Larger or heavier objects, such as acoustic ceiling rafts or long shelves, may require multiple suspension points to distribute the load and maintain stability.
The load capacity of a suspension assembly is not determined by wire rope diameter alone. The rated capacity of the complete system, including the wire rope, cable grippers, end terminations and ceiling or wall fixings, must be suitable for the intended installation. Always check the manufacturer's technical specifications, component compatibility and installation instructions. Where multiple suspension points are used, the load distribution must also be taken into account.
